Dr. M. Edward Cheeks

Dr. M. Edward Cheeks is the fifth Pastor of True Light Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi.  Pastor Cheeks has served in this capacity since March 5, 2006. Under his leadership, the church continues to be faithful to the cause of Christ. True Light is acquiring property surrounding its current location for the purposes of future growth.  Pastor Cheeks has led the church into a deeper spiritual walk focused on prayer and fasting. He has provided a vision into the future for True Light – a vision focused on fervent prayer, commitment, and faithful service united with our Lord and Savior, “One in Jesus.” Pastor Cheeks prides himself on being accessible to every member. Building strong relationships with members and the community are vital to the advancement of the ministry.

Pastor Cheeks is an educator with an extensive background in working with high-risk/low-income youth and utilizing federal programs to address their academic and social needs.  He has served as the Executive Director of Federal Programs for the State of Mississippi and the Chief Program Officer for the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators (NAESPA).  Since 2019, Pastor Cheeks has served as President of the Mississippi Baptist Seminary; the oldest statewide theological institution in Mississippi focused on preparing African-American preachers and laypersons for ministry work.  He is actively involved in local, state, and national Baptist associations.

Pastor Cheeks earned Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Mississippi. He holds degrees for Jackson State University and Tougaloo College. As a former military officer in the Mississippi Army National Guard, discipline, dedication, and education have become foundational components of his life and ministry.  Pastor Cheeks is a skilled presenter and innovator capable of forging partnerships across diverse populations. 

Pastor Cheeks is a community-oriented, student of the Word, who loves to preach and teach the Gospel locally, statewide, and nationally.  He is a writer known for sharing weekly devotional messages with his membership and community. Pastor Cheeks has been married to the love of his life, DeVonda, for over 27 years.  They are blessed with three sons, Jonathan, Myles, and Allen.
